RE: Using a keyword on homepage of a blog
I am using Wordpress and Genesis and I cannot figure out how to give my header image a keyword. I can't do an H1 on my homepage because it would look terrible.
I was thinking about putting it in my sidebar but would that cause problems with my category pages that target other keywords? I have gotten some errors for self-cannibalizing.
Thanks for your help!

RE: Using a keyword on homepage of a blog
I tried using synonyms or breaking up the keyword but Moz wouldn't give me a better score.

Using a keyword on homepage of a blog
I have a blog and the homepage has the 5 most recent posts. I ran a report card on my homepage for my main keyword. One of the problems is that the keyword only appears 1 time. I don't want to put it in the signature of every post because I found that causing problems with self-cannibalizing. I checked my competitor and they got a check mark for this but I looked at their homepage and I found the keyword NOWHERE! So where is my competitor hiding the keywords and how can I get the keywords on the homepage when the content is constantly changing?
Thanks in advance!

RE: Do Parent Categories Hurt SEO?
Well I am only getting decent rankings for one category and it is a parent category. However, I have not optimized the other pages yet so I cannot expect to rank well. I just want to make sure I am building a strong foundation. I am a new blog and want to do things right as well as I can from the beginning.
I am using WordPress.
Thanks for the link!

Do Parent Categories Hurt SEO?
I have parent categories and subcategories. Will it be harder for the subcategories to rank well because they have a parent category? The URL is longer, for one. I am just wondering if I should not have parent categories. I have one category page doing really well and I am trying to boost the others (most of which are subcategories) and this is a concern for me. Thanks!
Edit: I also have a category that has 2 parent categories. I want it automatically in those 2 categories and one of its own. By itself it is very important keyword. Is this ok or should I have it be a parent category?

RE: Noindexing Archive Subpages?
OK I see. Well I am using the Wordpress SEO plugin by Yoast and he says the plugin takes care of this problem so I don't know why this is happening. I am using the Genesis Theme.

RE: Noindexing Archive Subpages?
I have page numbers at the bottom of my site. That is basically what you mean right? The problem is that my latest crawl gave me 126 errors for duplicate page title and it's all the pg 2, 3, 4, 5 and so on for each category plus my homepage. So how do I fix that?

RE: Homepage and archive page competing for the same keyword!
I am working on fixing some things with the homepage.
Yes my blog has the last 5 posts on the homepage with some widgets and a navigation menu.
But it is impossible not to target the same keyword on the two pages. I really don't know what to do about that. My blog is about two main things. And I have two separate category pages so that you can see just one thing if you wish.
I could get rid of the category page and just use the sub-categories which are more specific elements of that category but that would be stupid since it is ranking so well with google. Hmmm.

RE: Homepage and archive page competing for the same keyword!
My homepage is indexed, thanks for the tip.
I did run the report card and my category page had a perfect score while the homepage had several issues. But some of those issues are difficult to fix. The category page is easier to tailor to just one thing plus I have a category intro.
What happens if I fix all the errors on my homepage? Is it bad to have my homepage AND category page optimized for the same keyword? My homepage has TWO keywords although I took one out of the Title Tag because I wasn't sure if having two keywords was ok.

RE: Homepage and archive page competing for the same keyword!
They are just optimized for the same keyword. I really cannot change that - it is my MAIN keyword. But my homepage is not showing up in the SERPs. So I believe that anyone searching would be quite happy to land either on the category page or the homepage. The category page will be more specific for sure but the content will be very similar as the bulk of my posts go into that category although I have two other lesser parent categories. So I suppose it makes sense that my category page comes up since it is a little more specific but how can I get my homepage to show up in the SERPs?

I will try some internal links, thanks for the great answer!

How do I use two keywords?
Hello! I am ranking very well with a keyword. But that same keyword without an S at the end (making it singural) gets quite a few more searches per month according to Google's Keyword Tool. However, dropping the S just doesn't sound quite right or make as much sense. So how can I target both keywords? Thanks in advance!
