Our domain is having a high spam score of 16%, what would have caused it and how do I reduce it?

16% is not that high. It shouldn't affect your reputation. If you don't have any spammy backlinks, I guess the topics covered by your website are also covered by some spammy sites, even if you have nothing to do with them. For example, many internet security portals and forums have high spam scores even though their contents are not spammy at all.
