Should we structure it starting at the homepage with the user selecting for home or for business, that way they have to make a selection before moving further OR should we somehow differentiate in the navigation using the top menu tabs, dropdowns, etc?

The better option is to differentiate the two with a drop down menu.

        • This way users can always navigate between the two without going back to the homepage.
        • It's a recognisable approach and creates an easier user experience
        • It creates an easier URL structure

I would give my users the option of selecting residential or commercial in a prominent position on the home page AND in the main navigation (under a Products menu item).

That will offer a good user experience and provide clarity regardless of which page they enter the site.

It will also make good sense for SEO as you're catering to two different markets and can address them as such from and SEO point of view.

            Hey Dustin!

You might actually look right here on Moz for inspiration. Check out how our main Product page is divided up to feature the two separate major products we offer:

            https://moz.com/products

You could do something like this right on the homepage of your website, as well as having it within the top nav.
