How do we identify poor backlink sites
-
We are often being preached to not get backlinks to dodgy or spammy sites but how do we identify these sites?
-
Hi,
There are a few services that help with this: Like, https://blog.monitorbacklinks.com
Here is a quote from the site above:
"What are the most common bad links-
Social Bookmarking websites
-
Comments that are auto approved from sites that are not moderated
-
Links from pages with very little content
-
Backlinks from websites with duplicate content
-
Link directories
-
Links from irrelevant websites and content

The main thing to note is just because you get a link from a not so great or bad site is that it by itself won't hurt you. Being proactive and making note of these link just in case you incur a penalty can help in the long run.
The main point is you don't want to chase these types of links. If they happen on their own, that's okay, if they start sprouting like mad then you may have to take some action.

Thanks for the response Don. I will certainly give that a test.

A quick suggestion to identify those sites.
- Check out their Domain and Page authority
- Trust flow ( Majesticseo metrics )
- Check with their backlink profiles using opensiteexplorer and ahrefs.com. Their backlink profiles must be healthy and coming from quality sites.
- Check the pages you are going to link to. If they have thousands of outbound links. I will never link back from those kind of pages.
Also Donford has suggested very useful points.
