Ranking for various keyword versions

Since we're talking about two different result sets, you will need to find a way to get some link juice passed to your plural phrase since you're already ranking well on the singular.  At least for now, Google does consider these as separate searches.

There are a few schools of thought here.  One of these might fit the bill:

• Single Landing.  Introduce the second phrase onto your existing landing page, making sure to monitor your successful phrase and make sure it does not lose ranking power.
• Multiple Landers.  Build a separate landing page, optimized just for the plural phrase.

Have you run any tests including the word 'vets' on a page?

I agree with John and would even take it a step further;

Create landing pages with your desired phrase in the text, alt tag behind the image AND

Link to newly created internal pages with phrases 2 OR 3 (not both on each page) to create a further, in-depth, trail for Google to rank you for.
