I have been experimenting with SVG images for SEO in the last 7 months. I can definitely get pages indexed using embedded links within SVG images but have not had much success measuring link juice.

Have you tried anything along similar lines? How much link juice does an SVG image pass?

        Yousaf

I can't answer your specific question however I would suggest you be very careful about attempting to embed links into SVG images.  Since SVG images are text files, sure you can embed links in them as well as any other text.

Except search engines could perceive this as an attempt to deceive them and if they do, you could be penalized for it.

          Hi Alan,

          Thanks for your reply.

You raise a valid point but I can not agree with you completely purely because there are legitimate use cases for embedded links within SVG. After all the whole point of SVG is to turn artwork into interactive graphic with machine & human readable data.

Take the following as an example:

          http://www.fastsvg.com/SiteMap.svg

Could Google dictate that the above use case is unjustified? I think it would be very naive of them really.

With that said, I agree this would be a goldmine for blackhats/spammers but having an attribution link (as per my blog post) within ones artwork is not spammy.

Your point is also valid Yousaf, however it's up to automated algorithms to determine what's valid, what's not, what's acceptable use and what's not.  That's the concern.  If you feel truly confident that your use could in no way be perceived algorithmically as being a problem, then feel free to proceed.

Personally I live in the world of best practices and recommend to clients that they avoid such potential pitfalls whenever possible.  Of course, that does limit their ability to make the most out of web technology, but that is sometimes a price that has to be paid when such risks could harm their revenue stream.
