Rebranding / Redirecting
-
Hi
I have a client who wants to re-brand their shopify clothing store under new domain name.
Whilst still a clothing store its going to have different department structure and product pages and will hence be a different store/site.
Is there anyway to pass any of the history/authority of existing site to the new one such as 301 redirecting the top level pages of existing site to nearest equivalent pages of new site etc or best to just redirect the old site domain to the new ?
Cheers
Dan

The best strategy would be to 301 redirect every page to its new counterpart on the new domain in order to transfer at least most of the history/authority.

Hi Dan
If you can find the equivalent pages for them in the new structure, I think from a user perspective in particular it could be very helpful to 301 redirect the top level pages to the new ones. Helps all of those with bookmarks etc, while also passing on the strength to specific places.
I'm assuming that the majority of your domains "strength" comes from those top level pages anyway, so you'll be passing on most of the "juice" from the old site anyway.
If you're only concern is SEO, then I'd be tempted to just redirect the whole of the old domain to the new one. You'd be guaranteed to pass on all the strength (that a 301 can pass on) this way.

Thanks for responding Streamline
There wont be any direct counterpart pages thats partly why im asking the question since essentially all new content/site structure etc

Thanks for responding Tom
There will be very few equivalent pages, i.e. 'blog' , 'T&c's, 'contact' etc etc since rest of site will be new content and structure.
Also from further recent research ive been carrying out since posting here its looking like Shopify doesnt support 301's anyway so think only option is to redirect the domain and to do that from within the domain registry/management control panel

Sounds like the logical step Dan, wishing you good luck with it!
