Another SEO has told a friend to nofollow certain internal links i.e. to their own website. There are no hard feelings but this sounds like nonsense to me.

Firstly, I'm sure Matt Cutts said that the link juice will not be redistributed amongst the other links (can't find the post - does anyone have the URL or confirmation?).

Secondly (and this is obvious) those pages which have links to other pages in the website will have no link juice to pass back, resulting in a lower "total sum" and the inability for that PR to flow back.

In short it seems silly. Any thoughts would be interesting to hear.

It would be helpful to understand the exact circumstances involved. For example, if your SEO advised you to nofollow links to your site's login page, I can understand that approach. If you were advised to nofollow a link to a page which is part of your navigation, I would ask for an explanation.

          Thanks. I appreciate the response.

Links to Terms & Conditions and such pages are nofollowed. I too see it as a common approach but I don't like the idea of link juice evaporation. After all even the T&C page has links leading back to the other pages, so why throw PR out the window? I think we're on the same page here which is a good sign.

When you say part of the navigation, could you illustrate please? Just to be sure I've followed what you said (no pun intended). 🙂

By part of the navigation I was referring to a primary page on your site. For SEOmoz, navigation pages would be Campaigns, Research Tools, Q&A Forums, etc.
