I have some content which is still relevant and interesting but not really suitable for my current websites. I have been thinking of using this on an article site to generate some links back to my sites, but I am wary about this due to Google's targeting of content sites.

I currently have good PR's on Squidoo and Hubpages which link back and work quite well.

Can anyone suggest any others or any ideas how to use this content for SEO purposes? Is using it for article submissions to get links short sited?

Try to post it as a guest blogger on a related blog in your niche. Tell the webmaster you have unique, valuable content and would like to post it on their blog if they will allow it, all you want is a backlink back to one of your sites in the article. Much more effective than just another article.

Article submission isn't bad, but those are generally low value links. How about guest blogging on other (hopefully non-zero PR) related on-topic blogs? Offer an article to a relevant blog in exchange for a linkback from the blog article. It's kind of like article marketing except that you pick the destination based on PR and relevancy, rather than just submit to a big generic article database.

You could also create landing pages for your site with the articles, and then promote the landing pages with SEO. Then have those landing pages feed into your main site.

Yeah one of those obvious things I'd overlooked! 🙂
