What portion of online sales are generated via organic results as opposed to other means?

I am wondering if there are any stats as far as what portion of sales we should be looking to get from ppc, affiliates, email marketing etc.

      Thanks

In Google Analytics, assign a tracking code to each channel and set up a funnel to a goal for each respective channel. You can add "e-commerce" to your GA as well, showing total sales and how each channel was navigated. I think that was your question?

Right now we are only getting traffic via organic seo. We have not really used other means of acquiring customers. I am trying to guestimate the increase in sales if we divert some resources to ppc. So I want to know what percent of revenue is generated via marketing (vs. optimizing) for the average retailer.

If the average retailer is getting 40-50% of their revenue from PPC, then that is something we will spend a lot more time/money on.

James is correct. Have you looked at your Google Analytics page? http://www.google.com/analytics/reporting

On the first page of your dashboard there is a Traffic Sources Overview graph which will show you what percentage of your traffic is from search engines, direct traffic and referrals from other sites. You can drill down and determine what percentage of your search traffic is organic versus from adwords or other sources.

Business models vary tremendously from site-to-site. Some sites only operate online, while others have physical locations and don't even support online sales. Some sites focus heavily on ads and have 90%+ traffic from PPC while other sites don't use PPC at all and rely completely on organic search, referrals and direct traffic. There is not any meaningful number for you to examine.

Every industry is different you can use keywordspy.com to see how much your competitors spend on ppc but with out testing the correct keywords you will not really know - because alot has to do with the way you setup your ppc account and the how well the site is setup to convert people (price, trust, usability, etc)
