Does Google (or other search engines) penalize websites if they have a too many inbound links from a single domain? (Say for instance, I have 500 inbound links, and 400 of them are from one root domain.)

It is not advisable to only build site wide links on one or two root domain. Google favors websites which have links from various C-block root domains.

Google will not so much penalize you they will just not rank you too favorably if you only have 2 links from root domains and over 500 links..

Thanks for your quick response.  Couple of follow up questions.

• Is there a tool similar to Open Site Explorer to identify C-block root domains?
• Will I get penalized if my site has 500 total links, which are broken down as follows:
• 400 links from one set of C-block root domain
• 100 links from 25 different C-block root domains?

No you will not get peanlized for that amount do not worry just try and make the anchors different and natural =)..

google will only take action if you have 3,000,000 links for example from 1 domain and 5 links from 5 domains in a space of 1 week and all the anchor texts are the same i.e. "SEO Consultant" on 3 million pages from 1 domain lol..

you can also look at domains linking in Google Webmaster tools
