      Hi SEOs

I have created a page on my website with a certain tutorial - let's say "How to change a tyre in your car". I have Grade  A from On-page report using SEOmoz tool. I have put a relevant alt description for each photo I have put in that tutorial and I have used relevant keyword as a name for each image. So for example this would look like that:

      changing-tyre-1.jpg

      changing-tyre-2.jpg

My question is should I name these file differently according to their content ? For example if on my photo there is some tool I have to use to change the tyre should the file have the name relevant to the subject of the article/tutorial on the page or to the content of the image ?

Is that a stupid question ? Or am I getting too fussy ?

      Thanks

Hi - I don't think you are being to fussy and I too would like to know how many hyphens is considered the maximum amount.

You could have some variations on the theme which would mean there would be some variation at least.  for example:-

        change-a-tyre.jpg

        changing-a-tyre.jpg

        tyre-change.jpg ......... and so on .......

I have been told it is ok to have -1.jpg -2.jpg - but woud like that confirmed.

        All the best

          Yes.

I'd make my image titles and alts more descriptive and unique. What are your images of specifically?

          man-changing-tyre.jpg alt="A man changing a tyre"

          changing-tyre-tips alt="Tips on changing tyres"

I have a website about bicycle maintenance which is my hobby. So I have tutorials of how to change a cassette in your bike. I would edit all my images and make program name them changing-cassette-1.jpg and so on. Lets say I have 10-15 photos for this tutorial. On some of them you have actual cassette on others you might have other parts/tools or actions that you have to use/perform in order to change the cassette. It looks very time consuming to make each file name more related to the photo content. I have really good alt descriptions for each photo. So is that not enough ? Do I have to give names such as: removing-lockring.jpg installing-new-cassette.jpg and are they better than changing-cassette-1.jpg -2.jpg -3.jpg and so on ?

I would describe what the image is. Having 15 or so images with the same text but with 1, 2, 3 stuck on the end isn't the best way about going about it. Usually I do this for myself as then I know which picture I'm looking at when I'm searching through folders but it's good to add diversity into a web page anyway!

Another thing to think about is the user experience. Do you know if users ever download the pictures and refer to just the pictures? If so, it can be helpful for them to know the order of operations.

Currently images are named changing-cassette-1.jpg + text description, then another image with number 2.jpg and description to that and so on. It will be quite hard to name it accordingly to content. File name could be then pretty long in order to make it making any sense.
