Due to some historic difficulties with our URL Rewriter, we are in the position of having the root of our site 301 redirected to another page.

So the root of our site:

      http://www.propertylive.co.uk/

      has a 301 redirect to:

      http://www.propertylive.co.uk/home.aspx

We're aware that this isn't great and we're working to fix this completely, but what impact will this have on our SEO?

You'll lose link-juice, PR, and authority. You'll get some, but some will be lost. Especially once you redirect it back. Depending upon how long you will be doing that, you may actually want to look into using a temporary redirect.

I'd hire someone to fix it if you can't in-house, that is a big issue!

          Thanks David,

It's been like this for many months. We're hoping to have a comoplete fix in the coming couple of months (this is a tip of the iceberg problem). But until then do you suggest a 302 redirect, or a 307?

I very much appreciate your help, you have confirmed our suspicions

I would suggest keeping the 301, Google is well aware of these type of problem so you should keep it simple, just 301 home.aspx to / once your able to do it.

If it'll be a couple months, a 301 makes sense. Get it fixed as soon as possible and get things setup with proper 301's and you'll be okay!
