I know exactly what you mean, I have a few of my own websites in this similar situation. You have higher DA, PA, MR, MT, more inbound links, but they still outrank you? Remember, # of links is not always indicative of rankings.
To try and bust through this, I would focus on writing more content. Write exceptional content. Then try and get authoritative links to that content. Sometimes one or two really authoritative links can bust through plateau's very easily.
The other issue is that you need to look at your link pyramid, are you too heavy in certain areas? It's important to have a well-rounded linking campaign. Don't try and force things. Natural links are best!
Also, Matt Cutts has said that they are going to look at Exact Match Domains and if they make any changes to the algo for EMD's, you may get your boost easily!

Also, don't worry too much about that single keyphrase. It's their strong point. Take the battle to them elsewhere; beat them in ten other niches for every one that they do well in.
It's worth keeping in mind that, yes, you're only rank 3/4, but the actual traffic difference between those positions and 1/2 may not be particularly significant (without looking at actual demand data), and could certainly pale in comparison to the value of focusing on obtaining other, brand new organic placements.

Thanks for the tips, google at one point had the main page ranking for Power factor corection than out of the blue google decided that random deep page should rank for it instead. due to the way our system works we get these giagantic title tags on deep pages. im going to discuss this with my tech guys as your right this should be resolved.

fingers crossed for that much needed algo change. i understand the need for natural links and better content, its a struggle when you have these very technical industries. this client in particular would pay us for years if we could move up for Power Factor Correction its an ego thing, i think haha
