Matt Cutts made mention that in 2011 they would be taking a look at why Exact Match Domains rank so well. You can read more here: http://searchengineland.com/key-takeaways-from-googles-matt-cutts-talk-at-pubcon-55457

There is no guarantee they'll devalue an EMD, but it would make sense if they did. I would use it while it lasts but do not bank on it... start building links and ramping up the authority the natural way by writing amazing content that is valuable to users and unique, then try getting links from high authoritative websites. The best way? Create amazing content that people link to on their own. Those links go a LONG way.

        Good luck!

Also (although it's semantics) they won't really reduce the ranking, they'll simply adjust the value of EMDs to not count for as much.

If the rest of your SEO strategy is in place and working you shouldn't see a big change at all.

Right, like I said in my post, they'll devalue an EMD, which in and of itself should reduce the ranking, depending upon how much they devalue an EMD.

I agree, worry about the rest and it'll come together!

Well I think its obvious why an EMD would rank so well. If someone searches "best buy" then the top results will all be from bestbuy.com. Because Google cannot separate a brand from a commercial phrase in the URL yet, it looks like they just have to reward the EMD simply so that people looking for a brand will find it.

My guess is in the not too distant future you will see Google differentiate between domain names that are brands and domain names that are exact matches of commercial phrases. Once they can separate them, getting the EMD for a commercial phrase will lose some value for sure.

Well a bigger piece of the puzzle is probably that a LOT of the anchor text into these kind of sites is going to be that exact match phrase, so I think it's not specifically a problem being able to identify a brand will fix for every site.

I agree though that Google is definitely making moves to better identify brands.
