Do I need to specify the country in the lang tag? Is this going to affect my ranking?

Hi,

The usage of lang="en" as an attribute to is recommended, if the content really is in English.

Language detects via the words used on the page (and in the URL), it does not care about the HTML tag.

(you can test via the language detect api what language google thinks your page is using http://code.google.com/apis/language/translate/v1/using_rest_langdetect.html )

I don't think it is going to affect ranking.

Thanks, but what about adding country onto the end of it e.g en-AU for English, Australian? Does it make a difference?

You can use either 'en' or en-AU, it doesn't make any difference in keywords ranking/SEO.

I agree with Alick, this does not matter much and I don’t think this will have any impact on rankings.
