I have to say that so far I am very impressed with what i'm seeing about the google plus project.  I think they may have finally fixed a lot of the missteps they've taken over the last half decade (looking at buzz, and wave primarily)  What do ya'll see in terms of social or even SEO impact from this project

And this is their Facebook! Google +1 and Google + validates the recently announced DOJ discovery process. Considering Google are the verb for search, it makes sense they leverage their business units to go after deeper engagement with users than search. They bolster their search revenues and develop revenue streams from sources other than direct search.

I believe they are a monopoly, and feel there is little choice but to pay attention to this type of development.

well i was hoping to avoid getting political with this post.  Id like to avoid the DOJ investigation if possible and leave that for another topic that would directly discuss monopolistic intent.  I am unsure if providing the best product is considered a monopoly....

As long as it offers something significantly different then it will survive. Otherwise they're just too late to the party.

I don't see what added social value the general populous will get from google plus. I am sure it will have some really cool bells and whistle's but the effort it takes to move a social party to a new location is HUGE! The added value must be significant, and you have to have reason to leave the first party.

I don't want to be just another nay-sayer... but I just don't think they are going to get mass buy-in. Without the mass numbers the statistical sampling will be flawed. So the social and SEO impact will be skewed. The beef everyone has with SEO is that website owners are making back door deals to get links. The problem with Google +1 is that the crowd that is most concerned about it is the SEO crowd and those that want to spread their influence through the search engine. Funny how they say that they don't want people manipulating the searches and then roll out a program which seems to only ask for manipulation. "Plus 1 this so that you can influence what your friends see in the search."

I understand that Google+ is suppose to be different than Google +1, but what Google is searching for seems to be the same, social signals to better rank websites.

I agree, Google offer a great search experience to users. If by having a great product you can achieve 80% of the market share in a territory you undoubtedly need to ask is this good for consumers?
