Redirecting a single page on a separate domain to a new site?
-
My client started a subdivision of their company, along with a new website. There was already an individual page about the new product/topic on the main site, but recognizing a growth area they wanted to devote an entire site to the product/topic. Can we/should we redirect that page on the old corporate/main site to the new domain, or just place a link or two?
Thoughts?

I would make prominent linking to the new site on that landing page. Then you have a chance of getting two first page rankings for the keyword search since you have one site dedicated to that product and also an established landing page optimized as well.

Hi,
My thoughts are that only if the page was on the same site would I advise you to redirect it. Since you're setting up a completely new website you should link from the existing page on the existing domain to the new page on the new domain.

I would 301 redirect that page's URL to the new website -- and manually change all internal links to that page to the new website. Others may suggest that you find all external links to that page and ask the site owners to change them, but that's usually not worth the hassle -- the 301 redirect will take care of it.

I would say to redirect the internal page to the new website unless you know that the page receives a decent amount of traffic _internally _(i.e. people navigating to this page from within your existing website) and you have a decent sales funnel / conversion process in place. In other words, does the existing page have value other than just being about the subdivision?
If not, redirection is probably your best bet. Ensure internal links that exist to the individual page at the moment are updated to point to the new domain.

Thanks for the replies - I think you nailed it JaneCopland! This was our gut, but figured it couldn't hurt to have a few other SEOs weigh in.
