        Hey,

Fixing On Page Issues is a strong step but websites that were hit on 4th Oct,2013, need to work on few things rather than 1

        • On Page Fixes (You have already done, Good Job)
        • Back-links
        • Social Sharing

        Back-links

        • Check and fix Anchors: If Money Anchors are more than 40 to 50%. This could be the immediate things to fix (Either Manually or Through Disavow)
        • Check Diversity: Too many links from one or 2 sources seems to be unnatural. Analyze and fix
        • Compare Local V/s Global: More local links like local directories, local blogs, local forums, better it is. If you are New York Based Business, it's always better to get links from new York Directories, Blogs, News etc.
        • Check Sitw-wide v/s Non-Sitewide Links
        • Check pointing links in terms of Home Page V/s Inner Pages. Better to have mix not too much on Home Page

        Social Sharing

        • This is crucial
        • Be social. Get more Google Plus, Facebook, Twitter etc shares of website pages. Use hash tags to engage audience to get more real shares and likes to website pages
        • Activate Google Plus Local Page of your business

All above points are assumptive. If you can point out your website URL, I can refer real  time issues.

        I hope, this will help!

        Regards

Can you share your URL perhaps? Have you checked the rankings from a browser in incognito mode that isn't logged in to anything? Also, how is your traffic? Have you noticed a change in traffic in your analytics program?

            Hi Wiqas,

Could you share the source for some of your information? I saw in another thread where you hadn't yet recovered from a similar traffic drop, so it'd be great if you could share the source of your stats and any success stories that you can share from them.

For "fixing" the anchors, hopefully in the first place you don't have control over that much of your anchor text. If you can control that many links, then they are likely to be unnatural, and it may be better to just remove them altogether than try to change them.

              Hi,

It is also worth noting that, if your penalty is an algorithm penalty, you wouldn't have received any messages in Webmaster Tools.

As you have cleaned up your onsite issues then it is more than likely due to the links that point to your website. There is no perfect combination of branded, unbranded, keyword, non-keyword links. It is best to judge a link on merit, so if the link matches the website and looks natural then keep it. This usually, however, means that if you have lots of keyword rich anchor texts then this is not natural and you need to be ruthless. Imagine if you were google looking at your profile, or, would you be happy to show your link profile to Matt Cutts?!!

                Hi,

Penguin 2.1 was released on the 4th of October 2013 and was known to affect a huge number of websites. If you've dropped so far in the rankings, then chances are you've been affected by this. Penguin isn't a penalty where you'd get a notification in Webmaster Tools, so you'll just need to look at your Google Analytics account and analyse your organic traffic to confirm that's the case.

If you go to a site like http://www.opensiteexplorer.org or http://www.ahrefs.com, then you can take a look at the type of anchor text pointing to your website. You'll most likely find that the majority of your anchor text is pointing at commercial anchor text and not your brand name.

What you'll need to do is focus on the following bits:

                1. Gather all of the backlinks you possibly can from OSE, Majestic, Ahrefs, GWT etc, remove the duplicates etc. Once you've got this, you'll need to manually check each URL to see whether it's a genuine link, or whether it's one that violates Googles webmaster guidelines. If it is in violation, you'll need to manually contact each of the webmasters and request for the links to be removed. Try each webmaster a minimum of two times and if they don't respond, disavow the URLs (or preferably the domains at domain level) - https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2648487?hl=en - Make sure you target any sitewide links and nofollow them if you're affiliated with any of the sites.

                2. Try to correct any of the on-site issues that you've received. Moz does a great job at doing this, anything relating to things such as duplicate content, meta titles, descriptions, thin content etc. Try to correct all this and you should have a good chance of recovery.

As others have mentioned, it'd be hugely helpful to see your URL as we can look into it further! 🙂

                Hope this helps.
                Lewis

                    No problem at all.

I wrote a Moz post on removing penalties a few months back. The actual article was targeted towards removing a manual penalty, but the information on gathering the data and analysing the links applies to both manual and algorithmic penalties - http://moz.com/blog/ultimate-guide-to-google-penalty-removal

It's a bit of a mammoth article (sorry!) but should help you to identify which links are good / bad. Essentially, start with removing all the sitewide links. If you're affiliated with the sites and get referral traffic, you can nofollow them. Once you've done that, start looking at blog comment spam, forum profiles and article directories.

If you look on OSE or Ahrefs, you could take a look at what your highest anchor text target is. You could then look at all the sites where you're targeting this particular anchor text and work to remove this first.

Once you've done all that, try to build some links to your site (which are purely from commercial anchor text), but build the links naturally. Write great content about your niche, write for communities and try to write content that gives the reader some value. That way, you should get natural social shares, natural links etc which should help to lift the penalty.

If you want more information on Googles guidelines, take a look here - https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35769?hl=en - It's pretty well laid out.

                    Hope this helps!
