Domain Forwarding and SEO
-
I have looked around and only saw older and contradicting responses to this question but what effect does having a domain with VALUABLE-KEYWORD.com forward to MAINSITE.com or COMMON-MISSPELLING.com forward to MAINSITE.com in terms of SEO and is it considered spammy or looked down upon

There is nothing wrong with forwarding common mispellings of your domain name. You will notice www.gogle.com is forwarded to www.google.com. It is a good business practice.
As far as keyword URLs, you can do it. There are several ways to implement it and some of those can be spammy.
www.searchengine.com redirecting to www.google.com automatically would be fine in my opinion. The user is clearly looking for a search engine, and you are helping them by taking the user to the most popular search engine. Nothing wrong with that at all.
This can be abused by redirecting users to unrelated pages, or pages that are clearly not what most users seek.

If you're wondering if you get any SEO benefit from this, I would say the benefits are going to be indirect in the form of more traffic to your pages eventually causing your rankings to climb, etc, but I don't think you're going to see any direct benefit such as ranking higher for those keywords on your own site.
