I am updating our product descriptions site-wide. I wanted to also update our amazon listings for those same products. Is that considered duplicate content if it would be on amazon and our site? Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to do that? Is google product ads also a problem?

        Don't Do It!

Is that considered duplicate content if it would be on amazon and our site? Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to do that?

Yes, it is duplicate content.  And, since amazon is a much stronger site they will get the credit for that content and your site could be filtered from the SERPs.

Lots of people are going to say that if you have the content on your site first then put it on Amazon, that you will get credit because you were first publisher.  Those people are wrong.  Strongest site wins - especially when strongest site is a Goliath like Amazon.

I used to sell a lot on amazon but I stopped.  Anything that you add to the site......  descriptions, images, comments will benefit your competitors and amazon as much as it benefits you.  It probably benefits amazon more than it benefits you.  When you have a product become successful then amazon will start selling it - perhaps at a much lower price.  Then you are screwed.

Selling on amazon is sleeping with the snakes.  It is like Exxon building facilities in Venezuela and then Hugo deciding to nationalize them.   You are going to be bitten - especially if you are successful.

Lots of people make lots of money on amazon.  Nothing wrong with that.  But if you have a website they are going to be your competitor.   If I was going to sell on amazon I would not spend my time putting assets on their website.   I would let amazon do that and my competitors do that and then go along for whatever ride I can get.

Another kiss of death is linking to your amazon items.  Then you will really have a hard time beating them in the SERPs.

        Be careful.  Extra careful.

In addition to EGOL's excellent comments, you will also have to compete with all the Amazon affiliates that sell your product, and even worse, they will create crappy ads on the web and Youtube showing your product.  There are countless Youtube videos of Amazon products that are nothing more than a pan and zoom of an affiliate product set to elevator music.

            • My beta site (beta.website.com) has been inadvertently indexed. Its cached pages are taking traffic away from our real website (website.com). Should I just "NO INDEX" the entire beta site and if so, what's the best way to do this? Please advise.
