Do you have swords in your domain name? Do you have lots of links with just the term "swords" as anchor text?

The domain name does not have swords in it but we do have a page which we have optimized for swords and that phrase appears in the url.

We do have some links with the phrase swords but we have tried to be careful with that.  Some are needed because it is the nature of our business and helps customers navigate the site.  I have looked at how often this appears on our site as compared to our competition who shows up in the first few rankings and we don't seem to have excessive sword links as compared to them.

That all sounds good...and you're competitive authority-wise with the top-ranked results?

Another good way to take it down is to be absolutely thorough on a compendium of information. Swords are actually a rather tough keyword to take down with so many different categories of people that would be interested in them. With historical collectors, to some guy whois a comicon junkie, the range of sword lovers is tremendous!

URL Extensions will aid you in the endeavor of winning keywords, however subdomains have been known to have a slight edge over them is something to keep in mind as well! I had a foolish notion a couple years back to rank in Saguaro Cactus and I made a 4 thousand word blog that surpassed even wikipedia's knowledge.

It started to get traffic and rank in different longtails but that didn't quite equate to people buying T shirts I later found lol!

I have looked at authority compared to the competitors in the top ranking and I can understand why they may be ahead of us.  We appear on page two of Bing which seems about correct., but we do do not appear in the first 10 pages of Google (maybe not even the top 50 for that term)which is the real issue.   We have  more authority and pages better optimized for the phrase swords than those further down in the listing and yet still ahead of us.  At least from my analysis.  We have also been around for almost 10 years so we are not a new site.

Our domain does not have the  phrase "swords" in it as it is the name of the company but we do use the phrase in may our urls.  We have optimized pages for the word sword and include that term in the url.   We have put a lot of energy into content with blogs and histories.  It all works for long tail keywords but for "swords " we are stuck.  It may be a competitive word and I understand why we may not be on the first few pages but  I can't understand why we are so far down and possibly not even showing up for that specific word.

Alot of factors could be at play here- and probably are. I would start be doing a link analysis comparison of your website to a top ranking "competitor" that is showing for one of your main keywords. This can be doing utilizing Moz Link Explorer, Ahrefs, or SEMrush. I would then check to make sure your keyword is reflecting in the Meta Title, H1, and URL (if possible).

Using a rank tracker on your phone or computer can help you track results as well, I like SEO Edge for iphone, which is like $12/year. If you already have Moz Pro or a similar subscription, you can use that as well.

It could maybe, kinda be like an over optimization filter.  Is it a specific page that seems like it should be ranking but isn't?  The homepage, I might guess. Have you tried optimizing a new/different page for the term and pointing some strength towards it from other strong pages on your site?

It's ridiculous, however it has been in my personal experience that an exact match domain if utilized on an optimized website, carries a tremendous advantage over it competitors. This doesn't mean I am suggesting to abandon your domain, however, DNS registrars can be purchased very inexpensively.

One of my latest projects has been dynamic web page creation with RSS aggregation. The competition when it comes to "Sword News" is quite pathetic in all honesty, primarily major news sites you'd get relevant advantage upon once established, and the runner up is some Shopify store with less than 200 pages in it's index.

However, when you search News.Google.com, there is a rather large abundance of Swords in that feed of news headlines. Google trends seem to reflect lush and consistent popularity. While "SwordNews.com" Apparently is owned by someone who left it on blocks somewhere in Amazon's cloud, "TheSwordPost.com" and "SwordTimes.com" both were open.

The way Google seems to work as far as successfully being admitted into their news feed, is you need to generate a boatload of traffic for like 1-2 months cranking 1000s of hits a day should be sufficient. Wouldn't you know it, Reddit is a endless VAST of trolls and nerds all about that sword life lol! The important factor is Google loves money, so while your juicing those numbers on your news feed site, you need to be spamming Google Adsense applications like it was a matter of life or death you get approved, then magically I bet you anything they'd be your best friend with the search results all of a sudden! 😛

If you succeeded in being capable of outputting swords into google news and referring the traffic to your money site, you sir would be ballin hard! 🙂

It would be nice if the home page ranked for this term but since the domain name does not contain the keyword we have put most of our SEO effort into a page with the keyword in the URL.  That is the page that makes it to the second page of Bing.  We do point to this page from other strong pages on the site.

I did a pretty extensive analysis a few months ago.on the top 30 ranking sites.  I looked at page speed and user experience using  Google tools,   Page score, domain and page authority using  Moz tools and Trust Flow, Citation Flow and Backlinks using Majestic.   In some areas we performed better than the sites at the very top but I get it may be that we don't have the right combination of these factors to drive us to the top but we are not even showing up close to the top.  If we could even get to the fifth or sixth page of Google we would  have a base line of to start trying things but we are so far down it is hard to know what to try next.

So have you tried putting a new url in its place, with new/revised content with the same internal pages linking to it--and NOT using a 301 from the old to the new?
