We launched a new page 2 weeks ago, and we want to know how much time should we wait to do Link Building and how many links should we try to generate to not get penalized by Google.

      Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks to all for you answer! Very helpful!

It sounds like you to intend to adopt an un-natural link building approach.  If that is the case then there is no answer to your question. Link building should be natural and mainly hard work.

How are you going about obtaining links?

I don't tend to agree with John really because there is absolutely no harm in doing some outreach to get links built. Outreach is an important part of any linkbuilding campaign.

As for the other part of your questions, try not to focus on the number of links, but do spend time making your page as good as possible to help make your page as attractive to link partners as possible. There is no such thing as the right number of links to not annoy Google, but if it doesn't look natural, you will end up with a slap in the form of a manual action.

Focus on your page and ask yourself "would I want to link to this?". What is it about the page that makes it such an amazingly useful linkable asset that others will want to know about.

When performing outreach, do research each site because a cold e-mail is unlikely to get you anywhere.

Have a read of these guides to help you get along.

Thanks Andy. In your work, how much time you wait to do outreach? Or you start to do this when your site is in good shape?

As soon as the quality of your page is worth sharing, start reaching out to try and build links. You can of course continue to make iterative improvements to the page after you've started link building, especially if you're not seeing any movement in where your page is ranking. Keep in mind it can take some time for your page to settle where Google thinks it belongs.

Start building links the day you publish. The "I just published this today" angle is part of what can make a pitch relevant, especially if you are pitching industry/news type sites that want to "break the story" on a bigger scale.

If you feel your new website is ready for people to visit it, why would you not start promoting it? That's basically what link building is these day, promotion.

As long as you get your links in a natural way and keep your link profile healthy, then there's really no limit to how many or how fast you can get them. If your content is awesome enough to get a bunch of links fast - then you deserve to get them (and the high rankings that comes with it).

                        Hi there,

Just to add to the other replies, there isn't really a perfect time to start link building nor is there a fixed number of links that could get you penalized. The focus should be on quality and if you're getting links that are genuine, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

As others have said, you should start as soon as you have something worth sharing. If you publish a page and aren't sure why it deserves to get links, then you're going to struggle to get them no matter when you start. You should also remember that not every single page you publish will generate links and this is fine. You may publish one blog post which is very high quality but not necessarily going to get lots of links, but may rank well for a certain keyword. So try to focus on quality over quantity with the content that you create and promote only your best and more link-worthy content.

                        I hope that helps!

                        Paddy
