      Hi everybody.

I bought an established  website about 2 years ago.  When I took it over, I went in and did a pretty good job of link building (my pre seomoz days) & tripled my search traffic to about 90 a day.

At the beginning of this year, I saw a steady decline in search traffic, which eventually evened out at around 25-30 a day.

I recently updated the site with new content, some really interesting stuff.  But I have not promoted it at all, I wanted to see how my sales changed with the new content up w/ no advertising.

For some reason, yesterday my search engine traffic SPIKED up to 148 & today so far seems to be the same.

Not that I am complaining, but does anyone have any idea how this could have happened?  I really didn't put that much new content on my site...

Also, 72 of those 148 searches are "not provided"...

        Hi Pedro,

The "not provided" data might be occurring because they access your site using the secure version of Google. If the users are logged in using any Google product like gmail they automatically default to the secure version and Google hides that data. Even Firefox does the same by using the https for Google. I'm assuming that the 72 out of 148 are showing up in the organic side in analytics. If that is the case, your best bet is to drill down to the landing pages and see if there is a spike in traffic on any one particular landing page on the site.

Did you do any form of paid advertising. That could also be the reason for keywords not showing up.

Good post on this topic here.

Hi, I would suggest that you check the new content pages if they got any link in the last time. If the content is good , maybe somebody link to it and start to rank for some keywords.

I'd try to see what you could find in common with the visitors. Are people coming from the same city? Are the visiting one specific page? Is there a page that you forgot about that might be ranking for a Thanksgiving-related keyword, which would have had a spike in queries today?

No I haven't done any advertising at all.  I haven't promoted it one bit since the update.

Ok then your best bet would be to review analytics for the landing pages with the highest traffic to give you a clue on the keywords. You should also check the bounce rates. If they are very high like 80 or 90%, it could be some sort of automated/bot traffic someone is sending to your site.
