I would heavily focus on the following resources:
Beginner's Guide to SEO
Moz Academy
Local SEO Domain / Page Authority

Reason being, you're a local business that thrives on local search. I would tie up any loose ends there.

I would also focus on learning the basic ins and outs of SEO so that you can take advantage of fundamental tactics to assist in your search visibility.

Moz Academy is a fantastic resource that has a ton of great information to help build a solid plan for you and your business online.

Lastly, I would take a look at the Recommended Companies from Moz if you require further assistance.

There's no clear cut answer to ranking and beating competition. It's a lot of different facets and factors to ranking in search. I would make sure you read those resources above and take a look at the technical SEO checklist.

One quick suggestion: On your blog you are not taking advantage of internal linking.

That being said before I get deeper into it. I looked ate other sites that rank in the top 10 such as thedenverroofingco[dot]com

I ran all the sites through Majestic and some of these sites like the one mentioned are shockingly poor at external SEO.It may be worth doing some digging on sites like that to see what they are doing as it would seem something onsite is working for them.

You may also have some issues with Panda, Page 5 also know back in the day as a -50 penalty was common for on and off page issues. You may need to look at stripping everything back to find any issues as a worst case scenario.

As Patrick Mentioned there is no clear one thing to do, i would recommend running your site through screaming frog or looking into crawl errors with Moz and make sure your site is optimized.. ensure that all relevant tags are filled and optimized.. You'd be surprised how much of a difference it can make.
