Adwords Keyword Planning

I'm wanting to do a comprehensive Adwords Keyword map in excel before implementing it to an Adwords account. This would involve planning my Ad groups and listing keywords in each group.

I've read RIchard Stokes Ultimate Guide to PPC advertising to do this effectively and find his process a sound one. He endorses the use of his product Adgooroo's SEM Insights to do this analysis comprehensively. However, it appears that this product is quite costly and I'm looking for a more cost-effective solution.

Can anyone give me some recommendations or alternative other than the Google Keyword Planner Tool to do a thorough analysis and thereby produce and import mass lists of keywords into my Adwords Campaign?

Cardinal Path, a leading Adwords educator & (I believe) educational partner of Google suggested about 15 different tools here.

I'm very fond of Spyfu but also check out Wordstream, Keyword Spy & SEMRush.

I haven't checked the pricing for all of these but all are paid tools at some level. Keyword Competitor does have a 30 day free trial and a few have limited free trials as well.

Another free tool I regularly use is www.keywordtool.io - it provides access to all the Google Auto-Suggest queries and allows easy export into excel. I find it helpful both for long-tail keyword phrases and for crafting ad text.
