Links From Unrelated Sites

Ok, I know this has kind of been answered, but...

I have a website that helps people find lawyers.  I also have a lot of friends who are musiciansand singer songwriters.

I could get these bands to link back to my page.

Should I do this?

Simple answer - no. Such completely unrelated links won't help your site's authority much, if at all, and the unrelated links on your friends' sites will just look spammy on them.

But I think you kinda already knew that, huh?

[Edited to add: Unless of course you could get them to write posts about why creative folks like musicians/songwriters need a lawyer (review booking contracts, intellectual property protection etc) and could then include helpful links in those articles for where to go to find an appropriate lawyer!]

What if I made a blog post about Law or something and linked it?  What if they did?

What if I make a blog post "things a real estate agent needs to know about law" and links back?

I saw an SEOMoz whiteboard video earlier who said that it doesn't matter if the site is related ornot.

But if you are trying to get a lot of backlinks from unrelated site then you have to aware of the output. Relevancy among the sites are one factors for ranking in google. So if you are going for a long term ranking its better to have a solid foundation built for what you are targeting for.
