I would say building backlinks is the wrong way to look at it. You want to earn links, which is completely different strategy.

Building links, you are going to tempted to take a few short cuts to see quicker wins, but these quick wins are usually the signals Google see's to unnatural back linking.

Whereas if you earn links, by producing great content that people link to naturally then you don't ever have to worry about Google updates. Its a lot harder strategy and takes longer to get the results - but in the long run its a much better strategy.
