We are using press release agency to publish our new products/brands/offers. I realise this would increase our links. Would this be a good method and would those links be permanent? Can I publish as many as I want so I end up with many good links from trust source?
Am I doing the right thing?

How often have you got something good to say or worth shouting about that deserves exposure?
As a link building strategy, this is limited, so don't rely on it and rather try to use it as a strategy to help popularise and promote something else rather than as an end strategy of itself.

It would depend on whom you are using, usually a good agency is at least a few thousand per release based on my experience. It depends on either how beneficial their contacts are for your business or how wide their distribution. To get consistent coverage in quality publications you would need new angles and interesting pieces to keep journalists wanting content from you otherwise you'll only be getting links from the PR submission tools which may not be worth the investment of your time and money.
