I always look at PA for my clients and when we broaden the scope I take DA in that picture together with MR/MT for the domain and subdomain.

Since a couple of months I started using a sheet based on the OpenSiteExplorer.org competitive analyses. That explains a lot but also lets my costumers see that there website is changing (improving) which is also quite important off course.

So mainly focus on the PA, then DA (with or without MR/MT) depending on the scope of the project.
