When I view the Duplicate Page Content report in Moz Analytics, the list of problems to address is inflated by the tool capturing a number of pages with internal links including query parameters and registering them as separate pages.  Typically the query param won't change content on the page, just default an option of the customer based on their navigational path. Is there a crawl setting I am missing that could tell Roger these are all the same page?

Thanks for writing in with the great question! Campaigns have a 95% tolerance for duplicate content. This includes all the source code on the page and not just the viewable text. So if a URL is at least 95% similar in code to another URL, this warning will appear. While the pages in question are very similar, they are also duplicates (at least the couple of URLs I checked in your campaigns)

You can run your own tests using this tool: http://www.webconfs.com/similar-page-checker.php

We don't know what standard Google uses, but it's safe to say they are a bit more sophisticated than us - so you might be okay in this regard as long as you have a couple hundred words of unique text per page. Google won't say how much duplicate content is too much, so we like to be better safe than sorry. I always also point Moz users to this post: http://yoast.com/articles/duplicate-content/ when they are trying to sort out duplicate content issues.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I'm here to help!

          Abe.

Thank-you for the prompt and thorough reply.  I agree that we have a number of areas to shore up and are taking initiatives on removing "boiler plate" text in favor of a more personalized experience.

With regard to the query parameter problem, though, perhaps I can give an example.
For the page at http://www.uhaul.com/MovingSupplies/, Moz analytics identified a duplicate content warning because of the page at http://www.uhaul.com/MovingSupplies/?ship.

In WebMaster Tools, we inform Google that this query parameter does not affect the content on the page, but we don't have a similar option in Moz Analytics.

Perhaps our methodology is outdated and we should not be using query parameters to display selected options, but I did not think that would present a problem as we have implemented it.

            Hi there!

This depends on your particular needs, but I would suggest blocking those query parameter-containing URLs in robots.txt. If you think it's important for search engines to crawl them, you could just block Rogerbot, and you shouldn't see duplicate content warnings about those pages anymore. Personally, though, I'd block those URLs entirely. 🙂
