We are trying to understand our website traffic, specifically our blog, compared to our competitors. Can we use Moz to understand actual visitor metrics against competitive domains?

Unfortunately no. Moz gets your traffic number because you allowed access to your Analytics. There's no way to know others if you don't have access to their Analytics.

There are sites that provide some open metrics, but almost all are inaccurate: Alexa, Compete, etc unless you installed their tracking code.

Actually there are few "spy" services that can give you  your competitors traffic, a few example are:

            http://www.similarweb.com/

            http://www.spyfu.com/

            https://www.compete.com/

similarweb gets their numbers from Alexa I think, so is spyfu. Compete has estimates based on their actual clients (the ones paying to track their traffic, like Alexa certified metrics), still those are just estimates that won't provide you any "REAL" data as the one Moz gets from Analytics. Worthless and completely manipulated.

You are right the numbers are only an estimates but I disagree with you that they are "Worthless", is always good to have an idea of your competitors traffic.  You can see what is the potential of market x or y looking by looking at big players estimate traffic.
