I have ecommerce site with both mobile version and desktop version.

Mobile version starts with m.example.com and full version starts with www.example.com

I am using same content through out both site and using 301 redirection by detecting user agent vice-versa.

My both sites are accessible to crawl by any google spider.

I have submitted both sites's sitemap to GWT and mobile site having mobile sitemap xml, so google can easily recognize my mobile site.

Is it going to help to rank my both sites as per my expectation?

      1. I need to rank for mobile site in Google mobile and ranking for desktop site in Google desktop version.

      2. Some of pages of my mobile site are started to appearing in Google desktop version. So how I can stop them to appear in Google desktop?

      Your comments are highly welcome.

I would ignore the m.domain ranking. You've done it right by re-directing based on user agents, although you should be able to see the overlap of the two sites. If they have both similar content then there's your first problem. Your second is that there isn't really a mobile specific or desktop specific index (my opinion!) that is why your mobile domain is ranking in desktop version.

You ideally want to block your mobile site from being crawled. When a user clicks on your normal desktop site listing on a mobile they will be redirected automatically to your mobile site anyway.

          Hi Hexpress,

          Mobile is hard. 🙂

First of all, I understand why you have a mobile version of your site. Although Google supports this, they recommend to instead use responsive web design to serve your content - which keeps everything on a single URL. This reduces the chance for errors and in general delivers a better experience for users.

          • It keeps your desktop and mobile content on a single URL, which is easier for your users to interact with, share, and link to and for Google’s algorithms to assign the indexing properties to your content.

          • Google can discover your content more efficiently as we wouldn't need to crawl a page with the different Googlebot user agents to retrieve and index all the content.

From the official Google Webmaster Blog

But in your case, this may not be an option. For separate URLs, Google recommends using a combination of both canonical tags and alternate tags. Google explains that it works like this:

          On the desktop page, add:

and on the mobile page, the required annotation should be:

This rel="canonical" tag on the mobile URL pointing to the desktop page is required.

You can also add the "alternate" annotation to your desktop sitemap. More information here.

Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO!

Man, that didn't format right. 😞 Sorry about that.
