Onpage SEO before Offpage?

Hi there,

I want to ask why should a website first have Onpage optimization and after that Offpage optimization or Link building/earning? I have read that this is better, even obligatory in many articles but I am not sure for the reason and benefits of that.

Can at least social media optimization start at the same time or at the middle of the Onpage optimization?

On-page optimisation is the critical first step, and I always make sure I get this completed before I do any more.

To use an analogy: you wouldn't advertise a store without having a premises, and stock, and staff. Likewise, you don't do off-page optimisation until you're sure that what you're directing people to is the best it can be.

I agree with Matthew. However, I suppose it would depend on what your current site is like. If you can get your google + or facebook campaign rolling now without much effort then go for it, but if you are starting the whole process from the beginning, then on page is where you need to be first.
