If you're not following the blog, make it a habit. Here is Rand talking about it:

        This may help you out.

It sounds like these were paid links? If so, and it's easy to tell they were paid for, then that could be part of the issue.

          Sitewide Links:

Sitewide links in the sidebar/blogroll are less valuable than they used to be - I'd never turn them down but you can't bet your link building campaign on them.

          Unnatural Links:

Since you got the "unnatural links" message, you might need to look into removing some of the spammy links to your site - depends on whether you got the message, or actually lost traffic and rankings as well.

          Link Building:

The best place to get started is by reading up on link building posts here on SEOMoz: http://www.seomoz.org/pages/searc...

From there, I'd check out the Link Building Basics section in the Beginner's Guide to SEO.

That should keep you busy for quite awhile, but once that runs out, check out Point Blank SEO's list of link building strategies. You'll rarely run out of ideas there.

I agree with Kane. I would also like to add:

Whenever you have too many links of any 1 kind, it's a problem. Too Many Blog Links, Comment Links, Press Releases, Article Links, Directory Links, Contextual Links, Reviews, Guest Posts, Sponsorship Links, Infographics and so on...they are all links,  they all count...follow links...nofollow links. All of them add up. That's what is a natural link profile. But when you have too many of a kind, it's very easy for bots to detect and that's where the problem is.

            Makes sense ?

As a follow up to this question, you need to take a look at Dr. Pete's article on the Penguin update:

Penguins, Pandas, and Panic at the Zoo
