301 Redirect ( How does the Html Code look ) Is there plugins for Joomla

Hey guys, It is my first attempt to actually code a site and do a 301 redirect for client of mine and i am seeking help on how to code the HTML code is suppose to look and what the process is .

Questions:

• Lets say i have an existing page. ( obviously i am guessing for the homepage i dont need a 301 ). ie:  www.testsite.com/category  and i need to move it to www.testsite/category2.  Do i need to keep both pages live on the site and redirect the traffic from old to new. ( and is this permanent and for how long do i need to keep the old page up )

• Two what does the coding for the 301 redirect look like ? Do you guys have a sample article explaining in detail what its suppose to look like and what i am suppose to write . ( sorry i am not a coder )

• I am using joomla is there a plug in for this? and i have heard everyone say use the HTACCESS file . ( how is this done and how does the coding look on this )

When you first install Joomla, one of the things you should do in order to get more search engine friendly URLs is rename your HTaccess.txt to a .Htaccess file.  If you have done this you should be able to locate it in the folder for Joomla's root domain (make sure you are displaying hidden files if using a cpanel like interface).

To redirect just add:

Redirect 301 /oldpage.html http://www.yourdomain.com/newpage.html

Yes, keep this there permanently.  A 301 is a permanent redirect.

With Joomla there are also a lot of plugins.  SH404SEF is the highest rated one, but is not free.  It will allow you to add redirects directly from the Joomla Admin panel, and also comes with a lot of SEO options.

I saw the SH404SEF software and i didnt know how well it would perform.

But i want to learn the coding so i figured i asked since some sites might not be so simple.
