How long for backlinks to kick in?

Lets say you do a guest post, Google indexes the article which must mean it has found the link back.
Would you expect to see movement straight away?
Some of my latest guest posts (in the last week) have been indexed but have shown no movement at all, but when I check WMT for links coming in they are not in the list so im guessing they have not taken full effect?

Firstly, you have to consider that the links you received simply weren't strong enough to make any movement on the SERPs. It could be that you've seen great success coming in from guest blogging but you're now ranking behind someone who has a solid backlink profile. Have a look over at ahrefs.com and see if you can find links coming from there.
I'm unsure of any particular figures corrlating page indexing and link crawling. Links from high authority websites will be noticeable much quicker, though.
There isn't a set amount of time before links take affect. It could be a few days to a few months. I do believe that WMT takes a while to update anyway, and a week certainly isn't long enough.
Another reason could that there has in-fact been movement, but you're just searching using a data center that hasn't been refreshed. I use serpfox for tracking and their rankings are always a day ahead of what I see manually.
Have a look around at ahrefs and see if the links are there. If they have been picked up then you can be sure that Google has and it's either:
WMT hasn't updated yet
No movement means these posts haven't had any effect on rankings

Thanks,
Thing that gets me is 5 guest posts on DA:30+ - you would expect some movement but maybe your right, maybe the websites are just not strong enough to produce movement.

I'd certainly have a look into it, if I were you. Have a look at the websites around you and see what sort of links they're getting.
Others on here might be able to give you a more definitive answer with regards to links being indexed/serp movement
