Yes, duplicate pages are a bad influence and yes, there's a way to make them less dangerous. You should do some readings on canonical URLS. Here's good starting point: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394

Magento is a nightmare for duplicate content.
