I have not seen many (or any) examples of Google displaying duplicates. Is it your home page that ranks in the natural results right beneath the Local results? The "Places" results, generally speaking, will match the "Local Search" box that appears in local-based queries.

          Hi Joe,

Without actually seeing your results, I'll have to be very general here in my response. Inclusion in the Blended Local rankings depends on hundreds of possible factors. Some say as many as 200 or more. Here are the most important, and perhaps you can see an area in this list that will highlight for you an area in which you can improve your overall presence to be able to break into the Blended Local rankings, instead of being just outside of them int he organic rankings:

          1. Lack of violations in your Google+ Local page (following all of the rules laid out here: http://support.google.com/places/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=107528)

          2. Lack of duplicate Google+ Local listings and avoidance of merging.

          3. Age and authority of domain.

          4. Proximity to city centroid (pay attention to this as it is sometimes handled differently within Places as opposed to within the Blended Local results).

          5. Number, quality and velocity of citations

          6. Number and velocity of reviews

          7. Number and quality of links

          8. Social factors

Again, I'm speaking very broadly here, but perhaps you can see something in this list where you realize your competitors are doing better than you, or where there may be a violation, or a factor over which you have no control such as proximity to centroid or domain age.

Anything looking like a possibility to you?

Thanks, I'll look into these in more detail.

The thing that's weird is that if you search in Places, it is #3. I would think that it would also show up #3 in the Places/Local box of a regular google web search.

It is the newest of the listings, and has a slightly lower DA, so I guess I'll just keep working on link building... and maybe get more on page text of the location in hopes it sneaks into the lineup on the mixed results. Again though, weird that in Places it ranks #3.

Yes it's the home page for both. Ya, I would think Places would match the Local Box in Web search too.

                Hi Joe,

Yes, that's somewhat unusual. I'd be most suspicious of possible penalties and proximity, but it could be something else. Feel free to return with further details after you've investigated this further. I'm curious about your remark that it's the 'newest' of the listings. You don't mean you've got more than one listing for the same business, do you? That, of course, would be a big problem.
