Website is now moved to a new domain. Are 301 redirects enough or should I ask webmasters to update?

Absolutely yes.
At least do it for the most relevant backlinks.
In fact, even though 301 redirect is perfect in order to bring to your new site the value of the old site's backlinks, the PRank passed via 301 is not 100%, but a little less.
So, summing all the small % of PR you are loosing because of the 301, you can see that your new site won't have the same Page Authority and Domain Authority as the old one.
For that reason it is always better to ask to webmaster if the may update the link they have to your site. Or, at least, asking the favor to the webmaster of the most relevant sites.

Never a bad idea to connect with others anyway, maybe consider an anchor text review at the same time.
