Hey guys, I need some advice regarding the keywords I want to target for a new website. The website is e-commerce and is about 60% done but i wanted some advice.

      home page - http://www.diamondengagement.com/

For link building purposes I only want to target the domain name for the anchor text "diamond engagement" and "diamondengagement.com"

      for internal pages like ....

      http://www.diamondengagement.com/engagement-rings/

I want this page to rank for "engagement rings" but that's a very competitive keyword. I was thinking for the first 3 or 4 months I only build links to this page with the domain name again "diamond engagement" and phrase anchor text's using "diamond engagement" than just out right building "engagement rings" or "engagement ring" to start off.

      What are your thoughts??

        Hi Harry,

If you do external link building you should not focus your anchor text on one or two chosen options (such as "diamond engagement"). Since the release of the penguin update, a lot of website have actually been penalized as their link profiles contained anchor texts that were purely their keywords that they want to rank for (looks super dodgy to Google). When building link, switch the anchor text around often to non-keyword ones such "click here" or "click here to access website", "company website" (just general ones).

I believe (not a 100% certain) that I once read that the anchor text with keywords you want to rank for, should be about 30% of the overall anchor texts used in your link profile.

        Best of luck.

I would start slowly building solely "branded links", stay away from anything that could be considered a "money term".  Once you have some trust and authority for your brand I think it becomes safe to sprinkle a few "money terms" amongst your links to give Google a pointer.  Alternatively don't do any link building and focus on producing quality, relevant content and links will grow naturally - then you don't have to worry at all! 🙂
