You'll need some form of analytics on your site in order to do this. The most common is Google Analytics and form within it you can see what your best traffic sources are (facebook, twitter, google etc.) and you can see the keywords that were searched to find your page. This can help you reverse engineer your customers...are you using analytics currently?

Yes I am using Google Analytics

I just opened my analytics - Am I looking at the correct sections.

Traffic sources>Search>Organic - these are the keywords which users are searching and then coming to my site? I can see some of the keywords there.

If wish to place google adwords as a reverse engineering method for these keywords  does that help?

Google Adwords will show you what keywords the visitor/clicker searched for, when the ad they clicked on showed. The point here is that you will of course pay Google per click made on your ads.

If you are ok with that, then yes, you will se a history of which ads were triggered/showed by which keywords "that the visitor typed in". Yes, if you go this route you will indeed see alot of keywords that were actually typed in.

So then I wish to know how do I compete with my other websites. Lots of them are not that meaningful still they show up before us. What should we do in order to rank high than our competitors? Adwords? Better content? What exactly
