I guess most people would say Magento.

I've also had experience with Volusion and can recommend them.

I would stay away from magento.

Depends what are you looking for? How big is the store going to be?

IMO some of the good ones all of which I work on currently:

• Shopify - Pretty good but I have some pet peeves with how hard it is to customize
• Big Commerce - Good for building out pages for seo
• 3D Cart - Would not make this my top choice but not horrible. Would recommend the top 2 over this one
• Spree - 100% open source and customizable
• Yahoo store - Old platform but people still like it. But who knows how long it will be around

To add to Sean's comments, also consider what you are selling:

• A single product, or multiple products?
• Digital only? (need to think about how to make sure stuff isn't copied)
• Subscription services? (you need recurring billing)
• Shippable items? (may need shipping integration, lookup in UPS, and heaven help you if you're shipping items that are considered dimensional weight)
• Do you need to keep track of inventory?
• Does your inventory change?

And what kind of site do you have? Are you doing a new site? Is this going to be added in to an existing site? Are you using a CMS of some time that you will need to integrate?

I'll add a vote for BigCommerce. They recently launched a big push to get developers to create plugins and apps for their cart. Also, their UI is very intuitive. For a newbie to e-commerce it's a great first start. Volusion is a very comparable alternative to BigCommerce based on the research I did before deciding to move forward with BC.

I have been using Interspire shopping cart (makers of BigCommerce). Its pretty good out of the box in regards to SEO and the admin area is very user friendly, especially if you have non technical clients.

Just FYI, Big Commerce has discontinued Interspire and left the website owners who purchased it in the dark. No more updates or support.

I use Yahoo now for my father's online store. I would NOT recommend using Yahoo unless you are coming into a situation where your client's store is already a Yahoo store and is well established.

I could write for pages on how far behind the features are. Our little business is small potatoes and we are consistently 2 years ahead of yahoo when adding features to our site and when finding solutions to our e-commerce problems.

I know you didn't necessarily just recommend it by saying "Old platform but people still like it. But who knows how long it will be around..."

But, I am here to RECOMMEND AGAINST IT.
