Hits to my website have been gradually growing over the last 2 years to a point where there was 1300 organics a day. Recently the hits crashed to 300 a day and stayed there for a couple of days. They then bounced back to 1300 a day for a few more days before crashing down to 300 again.

This has happened a few times now. Oscillating between two points. Its like the site is crossing a threshold of something, back and forth. I have looked at different parts of my site and every part is down by approximately the same percentage.

Anyone out there have any ideas?

Usually the organic hits is related to your google position. Your position in your best keyowrds changed over time? this can explain it.

My question is why the change. We have been static or claiming in all relevant key words over the last 2 years. How can I work out  what is causing this fluctuation in position?

Is this with visits from all engines, or just one search engine? If it's just one engine but not the others, that points more towards something with the way one particular engine is looking at your site. If it's all engines, then it might be something more happening with your site itself.

You might also see if you can find any more specific trends. is it one section of your site that's going up and down in visits, such as one folder, while the traffic to the other folders are OK? Or some keywords that are fluctuating while others are fine?

Its just google and its hitting all section of the site equally. Most keywords drop by a number of places and then bounce back. They did this a number of times, but haven't yet bounced up again.
