I tried reading the whole Gblog but got bored. If you look at the SearchEngineLand piece, what it points out from the blog is important:

Link evaluation. We often use characteristics of links to help us figure out the topic of a linked page. We have changed the way in which we evaluate links; in particular, we are turning off a method of link analysis that we used for several years. We often rearchitect or turn off parts of our scoring in order to keep our system maintainable, clean and understandable.

So, there is not a "We ain't usin' no stinkin' links no mo!" But, "Hey dudes and dudettes, we are gonna change some portion of the weight we give this around a particular portion of how we look at 'em."

What could be more clear???!!!! Maybe they are giving less weight to root domains linking to a link that links to you. Maybe they are re-evaluating anchor text usage or how it is used, etc. So, as it stands today, we know that there is some weight that is applied based on links. How it is applied or the given weight of the application is not known. As the result, we don't know what changed about what we didn't fully know before.

        Is that clear???!!!

        Keep building links dude.

        Best.

Thanks God holly cow!! It might be the end of spammer link building strategies, power-super-mega link wheels and so on. For legitimate site it can only be beneficial. Will see how it's gonna change serps 🙂

Vjau, links will still be there they just turning off "** A Method** of link analysis that we used for several years". I Hope more power from good real relevant links and less power for different methods of influencing Serps.

I think that we all who are in seo or internet marketing(especially those who work hard) should be happy that the search is changing; IMHO we need it.

From reading around the impression I get is that the update is removing some link weight from higher PR sites in order to reward sites with a diverse range of backlinks (to try and catch out those with tools getting links from a concentrated source or paying higher PR sites for links).

I think as long as you have regular, quality content and concentrate on getting links from a wide range of website types (that are relevant) then you should be fine.

We can certainly dream about an end to the spammers!

i agree, but I always get confused as to  should I go to a wide range of sites to build links or relevant sites 🙂

                  thoughts?

                  Thank you Caroline.

I think you can still get a wide range of links whilst keeping it relevant.

Here's a theoretical example for the topic of back pain -

A backlink from a .edu or .gov site will have high authority. Some SEO's have targeted just getting links from these types of sites just because they have a high PR (Not neccesarily .edu or .gov, but I'll use these for the sake of this example)

With the panda update it's been suggested this isn't going to be enough anymore (other people's suggestions, I have no data to support this).

As a result you may need a variety, but still relevant set of links.

                    For example

A backlink from a blog talking about casey stoners back injury from a high authority racing blog could be relevant

A backlink from a blog from a worried mother who's son is at university with back problems.

A backlink from a walking society website on content relating improper footwear to back pain

                    etc etc
