  • I like the option of doing a no index follow tag. Good call Gianluca. I love reading your advice because it's the result of so much experience!

  • Thanks for the tip Alan! SEOmoz is showing errors for all of these as it is causing duplicate content. We just launched a new site with a CMS and the search is a bit different than our old site. The site search has also inflated our site from roughly 400 pages to over 2500 in SEOmoz.

  • KT I think you are telling us that you have a static domain. As in your domain is the only domain on that IP address  here is an example of what I'm talking about http://www.whatismyip.com/faq/difference-between-static-ip-address-and-dynamic-ip-address.asp  if that is what you meant "by some sites (who do things well) 301 on the IP, others don't so I wasn't sure if I was missing something" I would say the only chance of any site doing well in the search engine world is if it is a static domain obviously gone over that still there are very many security reasons to have a DHCP over static IP if somebody decides to attack your site for whatever reason you are a sitting duck with a static IP at least a DHCP can change it and the way all the search engines are set up now a virtual IP domain name or DHCP is treated just as if it were a static IP to Google there is no difference the DNS  domain name service has to take those numbers and turn them into a readable user friendly word we can remember I think you're confused about the difference between an IP and a domain regardless of what you do your site will suffer greatly if you do not do a 301 redirect or some sort of mapping as I suggested and please understand that is a guess I don't know that a robot.txt would be sufficient I would strongly suggest because you're putting so much time and effort into making a website that you want to rank well on the search engine's using a 301 redirect whether or not use static IP or domain on a DHCP  here is some more info as well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL_redirection I wish you the best with this please do inform me of any way that you have of knowing you will not be victim to the same issues everyone else's when it comes to duplicate the links duplicated content. I do know Google bots don't just stop when they see no follow they go on and they indexed everything then they decide what they wanted for you to rank well. I think it would be more than confusing when you type  site:example.com  and  site: www.example.com into Google only to find you spent time building links for one of your two websites. Regardless I wish you the best on your endeavor, Thomas

  • OSE is based upon the Linkscape crawl of the web. Linkscape is designed to crawl the top 25% of web pages based on their importance (i.e. links). The crawl process takes 2-3 weeks, and then it takes 1-2 weeks to process the data. About once per month the Linkscape data is updated. The first reason your links may not appear is it can take up to two crawls for a link to be seen. Depending on when the link was added, it can take 2 months to be visible in OSE. The Linkscape update schedule can be seen here: http://apiwiki.seomoz.org/w/page/25141119/Linkscape%20Schedule The other reason a link would not be seen is if it is on a page with low PA. A page with low PA wont pass any real link value so it is not included in the link profile.

  • I'm curious about this as well. My site which is just a blog currently has a warning of 200 or more links. Since it's a blog is this ok? On average, I have about 5 - 6 links per post. I think SEOMOZ crawler is counting everything as one page which is where it's pulling it's 200+ from.

  • Hi James, when we talk of duplication we do not mean just plain duplication, but overall duplication too. Moreover, duplication is not just about main content, but about all the code of a page, therefore sidebars, menu, header and everything a page is composed by. As you have noticed, those three pages are substantially identical, and the differences are to few respect the similarities. What can you do? For instance you could provide a text to these sub-category pages. I know, it seems hard to write original and different content when products are very similar... but it is possible. For instance, if you can why don't you ask for feedback from clients who have bought those product and add them in the sub-category pages as testimonials? That's just an idea, but surely that a good brainstorming around a beer can present your more ideas

  • Do you have any kind of basis for how much it will benefit the search engine rankings? If you were moving from "parts.com" to "carparts.com" it is likely you would see a noticeable improvement for exact match searches. Moving from parts66.com to rvparts66.com presents a complication. Even an "rv parts" search would not be an exact match as you have the "66" included in the domain name. Your site will never have an Exact Match Domain which receives the highest benefit. Instead you would be seeking to move from a partial match domain to a better partial match domain, and the improvement may not be noticeable. I would suggest substantial testing and research prior to making any change. I am not aware of any case studies on a change similar to the one you are considering.

  • Hi, It's quite easy, within the implementation of your microdata you're using at the moment probably this: 24 As you can see this item property is relating to "votes". If you change it to "count" as in the following example you will probably see your snippets change to reviews instead of votes just like you want it. 24 To make sure you're snippets are working like you want, the Rich Snippet Testing Tool could be a solution to test, and with my advice above you will also see the change for your rich snippets. More information about rich snippets for reviews in general could also be found here.

  • Many thanks Heather, great answer. I agree, better to avoid automated posting to Ezinearticles and instead submit select articles manually to a few chosen article directories.

  • In Joomla you have you can set up page titles in several places. Global configuration includes use Site Title in page title, Most templates (I just looked at one in JSN Epic) have an SEO option - Enable website title, and you have the option for each page to set metadata options (meta description is here and there is a sitewide meta description). So, most likely what is happening is you have your settings where you are picking up the site title on every page and then you have put a title on every page (this is the one where alias is under Title). I would suggest going to Global Configuration and to the right side where it says include site name in page title, mark that as NO. Save and close then look at site (after refreshing). Run SEOmoz page elements before and after and see if there is a change. _If not, you can go back and re check to yes include site title in page titles. (This way you are only changing one thing at a time which is important to track the error and know you are correct). _ If you are still having the problem with meta description, go to Global Config and cut the site meta description out and paste it somewhere else (I am pretty sure you have to be using Explorer for cut and paste in Joomla) or copy it to somewhere so that you do not have to rewrite. Once there is no site meta description, save and close again. Refresh again and run page content from SEOmoz toolbar on a couple of pages. If each page has been given a separate meta desc. then you should be seeing that as opposed to site meta. (Typically the site meta is for the feature page which for our uses is always the home page). Let us know how this works out and we will follow along. Best.

  • Thanks a lot for the help. I realised too that the tag cloud is a real pain because it did compete with great pages if my site for a particular keyword so I put a no follow on these results and think will have to do it for each tag.

  • We have now added the preferred domain in Google. I was a bit suspecting this but not sure. When I did a site:meresverige.dk i only get results with www.meresverige.dk so I thought Google had figured it out. I will wait for a week or two more and see how it goes. As for the redirects of the /malmoe to /malmo without the www i agree this is weird. It does not show in OSE at all. But when I use firebug I can see it redirects as it should. Have you seen this before? Thanks again

  • No i would not remove pages, How pagerank works is in simple terms, image that every page is awarded 1 point, you have 3 pages your site has 3 points, you add 3 more pages , your site has 6 points, but divided by 6 pages, back to where you started. but by internal linking you can pust that 6 points onto one page, you may end up with 1 page with 3 points and 5 pages with 0.5. What i would do, is chose a page you want to rank for a subject, term, keyword. then all other pages that have relevance i would link to this page. I once again suggest reading this page http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank.html
