  • Thanks, Tom. Just what I was looking for. Another question, kind of related: On my company's home page is it better to have a +1 button (so users can +1 the page) or a G+ button (so users can follow our company). Not sure which is a stronger signal -- lots of +1s or lots of followers? Thanks...

  • Thanks Tom! I thought so, just wanted to make sure. The domain with dashes doesn't have a spammy link profile, just a spammy url We finally got our hands on the non-hyphenated version! Thanks for the help! -Ricky

  • Hi Niners, Hi Niners, most current CMS (content management systems) operate in a dynamic capacity, which means the issues you are facing are not exactly unique to .net applications. This is is actually good news, the more people who face the issues the better chance there is some help out there. I have built and or worked over a dozen large scale eCommerce applications in my time, and the one thing they all have in common is even though they are dynamic in nature they all required extensive time and content development. The ones that have done the best had the most time spent on creating content and working on SEO. Since .net is not an actual language more of a framework I think I most people would be hard pressed to provide much more targeted info. The main key is using a CMS that will accommodate user specific tweaking so you can differentiate yourself from the other sites using the same platform. In the end all of which requires time and effort. Hope that helps

  • I've read this paragraph three times already and I still don't get it. Which tools are those two you are talking about? Are you referring  to something like s*box? Also, what do you mean by "NO USING LINK BUILDING TOOLS AND PRODUCING LINKS FOR YOUR SITE QUICKLY WILL DAMAGE IT. "?

  • It actually wasn't a manual edit.  For rel=publisher, I went to a Titles & Metas under the Yoast SEO plugin, went to the Home tab, and entered the company's Google+ page there.  For authorship, I went to the author's profile page in WordPress and added their Google+ page in the appropriate field. It sounds like this is going to take some template editing.  I'll give it a try when I can. Thanks!

  • tags are not that big of a ranking factor, if at all. They are important only insofar that they help Google determine what a page is about, which tags should do as well. If you really want to see if they make a difference, try having your page with tags one month, then without the next, and see if rankings change. Then write a blog post about it on YouMoz for a nice backlink.

  • You do need to make sure you do a 301 redirect to the pages without extensions.

  • In addition to Tom's response, you can also use Google Webmaster to remove the site out of the index a little faster: Follow these steps to remove a site or directory from Google's search results: On the Webmaster Tools home page, click the site you want. On the left-hand menu, click Optimization and then click Remove URLs. Click New removal request. Type the URL of the directory you want removed from search results and then click Continue. (How to find the right URL.) The URL is case-sensitive—use exactly the same characters and capitalization that the site uses. If you want to remove the whole site, you can leave this blank. Click Remove directory. Click Submit Request. Make sure you aren't accidentally linking to the dev site from your live site. I have seen this happen too many times.

  • Hi Onlinchester, You are not the only one. I noticed it too. Only in certain group of keywords, and always if there is a local result. So it is not the Panda update I think (fortunatelly... or not...) I also found this article from an agency that noticed the same: http://www.1stonthelist.ca/articles/are-your-organic-listings-being-replaced-with-local-listings/ For now, the CTR in local seems to be better for local than in organic, but I'm surprised. We will see..

  • Obviously, can't be completely certain why the drop would have occurred, other than explaining the many ranking factors that you probably already know about. What I would point out, however, is that each region acts like a different algorithm.  They're all very much based on the same one, but I think there's definitely a case that some ranking factors are more important in other regions. Give you some examples from what I've seen: On-page optimisation in Google France can make a big difference.  I've seen a number of clients and sites (only correlation, not proof) that have tweaked their on-page and had really significant gains.  Another example is Google NL. All that Penguin stuff that happened last year? Well, for many niches it looks like someone forgot to tell the Dutch because you can see an almighty amount of spam ranking very, very well. I realise this doesn't help you very much, but the reason I mention it is that, if you have the time and resource, it really does pay to look at the ranking factors and their "weight" for yourself - do your own testing based on best practices, if possible, and you might be able to see some differences between Google UK and AU.

  • I second this. Yoast SEO Plugin is far superior to the All in One.
