  • Absolutely anchor text is still important. Google will even use anchor text to tell if a page is relevant even if can't crawl the page due to being nofollow or noindex. In a blog you would want to consider organically using anchor text. Your links should be part of a sentence few words or so and vary but be related. A couple examples: Recently while remolding my 1955 Desoto I had to find a power steering kit to work with my FIREDOME 4.8L 291 engine, I found it local shop Ronnie's Deals for Wheels. The second thing to note is you should probably limit the amount of links per article to 2-4 as to make sure the link juice and context is maximized. Hope that helps.

  • Hi Nicola, I work with Jamie and she is out for a 3-day weekend so if you don't mind I'll jump in. You originally asked "lets assume you were to get a link from BBC or CNN how long does it take for that link to have a positive impact on your rankings?" I believe those are the benefits Jamie was referring to, positive rankings. Whether you actually see any ranking benefit depends on numerous factors. Referral traffic is another potential benefit. When you say the link would be the company name, once again there are numerous factors involved. If your company name is "SEOmoz" then your company name also includes your primary keyword focus. Google can also relate your relevance based on other factors such as the surrounding text or page title.

  • I don't understand how it works. from what I can tell it merely finds websites that MIGHT be good candidates for getting links? If that is the case I can't imagine it's worth even 50 cents, I can use Google now to find link prospects. what does the wordtracker tool actually DO?

  • I have some experience in this as all of our websites are in at least 2 languages - some in more.  I have found that I have had to do SEO seperately for each translated version of the site to get them to rank.  So, for the Spanish version, I had to work on creating links back from Spanish sources specifically to the Spanish pages.  For the Russian pages, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese and Korean pages I had to do the same.  The SEO work I did on the translated pages did not seem to have any noticeable benefit to the other languages SERP even though the pages are all like together. It sounds to me that since you guys are primarily a French site, it may be that you got most of your links back to your French pages, from French sites.  If that is the case you may try to work on specifically getting links for the English section. I hope this helps.

  • Aaron, Since there isn't cost beyond yearly domain pay to keep it up, I will go with option C. Thanks for your explanation and recommendation!

  • If you have a list of the linking pages from which your SEO firm requested removal (and you should) you can use ScreamingFrog to crawl that list, with a custom filter set to look for your URL. It'll spit back a list of pages that still have your links on them.

  • Its a great discussion. I doubt that Google or Bing will give us a real answer. But if you can forward negative SEO then we are in a heap of trouble. As far as testing this, I say go for it. Mr. Cutts says that if you get an algo penalty and you undo it then the penalty is undone.

  • I have also seen the Moz system need time to find links after I added a new site to a campaign recently however also be aware that as vast as SEOmoz's data set is, it's not the entire web. And in reality, no single link reporting solution in existence currently (even Google's) is going to show you all of the links that might be pointing to your site.

  • Linkscape is updated approx once every 30 days, but if there are issues with the index (which occasionally happens) it can be a couple of months behind, which would explain the delay. Has your link shown up yet?

  • Thanks for the response! Yes the client is pretty web savvy so I'm sure they're asking all the right questions when it comes to metrics. However I'd still like to be able to give them something more concrete re link equity. To be clear this is placed/partnered content and not ads as such - more microsites within the root domain. What I can respond with so far DA is excellent, PA is very low for all options. One option also has very spammy links pointing to the example page provided None of the links in the examples are no follow however the content is marked as advertisement or sponsored content Cite JC Penny etc and risks and underline importance of sustainable linkbuilding Any other thoughts anyone? • Rand wrote an article about footer links some time ago that still stands up well today: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/footer-link-optimization-for-search-engines-user-experience I'd say if you are duplicating links, it's a good time to re-examine your navigation.
