  • Hi Stephan, I agree with Scott that this is possible but question how much more trouble it would be to run two installations for the two blogs? The canonical tag will take care of the duplicate content. I don't see much wrong with duplicating using this approach if the duplicated full article is better for users on the non-canonical site, or using the snippet + link approach if that's fine for usability / reader interest.

  • Google will index the two sitemaps fine, just remember to submit them both if the root sitemap doesn't cover WordPress. A blog could be a great addition, and you could share posts in the forums as a way to distribute the content. Your plan is sound, as long as you install everything correctly and people like your blogs

  • All of these are great answers. Below are a few more resources you might want to check out prior to launching: The 2014 SEO Checklist by ClickMinded: I can't endorse 100% of everything on there (we all have our own opinions, tools and methods) but it is a fairly comprehensive checklist. The 2013 SEO Ranking Factors Study by Moz: This is from last year, but still relevant and mostly accurate. The Periodic Table of SEO Success Factors by SEL: I find this visual format very confusing and convoluted, but others find it very logical and easy to interpret. I think it depends on the person. I'm more data-oriented rather than visually oriented. Either way it's a good resource. The biggest mistakes I see on eCommerce sites are as follows: Non-Unique Product Copy (e.g. Content taken from manufacturer or distributor descriptions, or product feeds) Internal Duplicate Product Copy (e.g. product variants with their own canonical URLs using the same copy, non-canonical URLs created by query strings, from products in multiple categories, etc...) Thin or Useless Product Copy Indexable URLs for Filtered/Faceted/Layered navigation Indexable URLs for internal search results Indexable shopping cart URLs Good luck!

  • What's a good guide for doing this? We're using Joomla and if Google just displays the first author that'll work great.

  • This sounds a little risky. I would avoid doing redirects if possible. If this was my site, I would get into my analytics and find out which 100 pages are pulling in most of the sales from people who enter from search.   I would then spend whatever time it takes to recode about five pages by hand,  using the best SEO practices within my ability. I want to make them into something kickass. After I did the first five of those pages, I would get in touch with a consultant, show her those pages (before and after shots), tell her the goal and have her give opinion on what might be done better.  When I do something big like this I always get second opinion from someone who does more SEO than me and who is smarter about it than I am.   I might ask a question on Moz or get a friend to look at something.   I always get advice from people I trust when doing this.  I don't worry about cost.   One taken opportunity can be worth literally a million dollars in the long term.  One screw up can cost many thousands of dollars immediately and millions over time. So, after these consults I would launch a few dozen hand-crafted pages and see what happens.  A couple weeks later I would launch  more if the results were good. The higher the value of these pages the more that I would do by hand.  Once I thought that I had things under control then I would write or have written a program to do the rest of the job automatically. I am never in a hurry on a high value job like this.

  • You can remove them via GWT as Chris has so aptly mentioned.  Best way to do IMO.

  • Thanks William. We found screaming frog recently. Why nobody ever told us about it before is amazing.

  • Google just rolled out a big Panda update and a couple of smaller updates besides, so there's a possibility that this was just a glitch. We generally say that if you see something bizarre happen around big updates, wait it out a few days and see if things go back to normal. If you don't see this happen again, I'd but it down to a fluke...

  • The difference in the ranking strength of those two URLs is negligible. Your decision should probably be made by deciding whether or not you're going to build out those directories and have the content to do so. Having /properties/new-york/rental suggests you having multiple properties in New York, some of which are rentals. If a visitor went to /properties/new-york, would they see a page with multiple New York properties, some for sale and some for rent? If the visitor just went to /properties, would there be multiple regions for people to browse through? If you have the content and ability to do that, then build it out with the subdirectories. If you don't, then focus on that single page with the keyword as the slug.

  • Hi Anthony I just wondered if you had started to use Channel Advisor as we have recently been approached by them too. In particular using their platform for feeding into shopping comparison sites. Thanks

  • Hello Jesslyn, Like I said before, Joomla is not one of my specialties but I'll try to help. You need to edit the file /components/com_sh404sef/shPageRewrite.php to add the code. How did you install joomla and what hosting provider are you using?

  • Hi Michael, It's definitely best practice to place title tags (at least) on all pages and I would recommend doing so if these pages are accessible to search engines, i.e. not blocked by robots.txt, a login requirement, etc. "Would it help the site as a whole rank better?" - I can't say whether it would help primary pages or the home page actually rank better for their target keywords, but it's certainly not a good sign from a search engine's point of view to come across as website with a lot of pages online, indexed and devoid of titles.

  • I dont think you would have an issue with page speed, just by adding a few links. Think about it from a consumer point of view. If your users want to see your social profiles, they will have to search for them manually, which they probably won't, or worse case scenario, they could find a competitors social profile instead. I would add the links or icons towards the bottom of the page, depending upon how your page renders. Once you have added them, minify your CSS and code to decrease page load time.

  • I don't think it is bad. Majority of my client websites uses it in footer only. We haven't seen any issues.
