I am not 100% in agreement with Alick. Google struggles a bit with subdomains, it sometimes treats them as separate websites sometimes as the same website.  John Mueller informed Distilled of same circa 12 months ago. I would be cautious going down the path suggested, can you not migrate the content and re-direct? Hope that helps.
